Striped Lace Bolero Knitting Pattern

This striped lace bolero knitting pattern creates exactly that: a loose, relaxed shrug worked in thin cotton yarn, with delicate lace rows that appear like clockwork at every colour change, giving the finished piece its signature rhythm and airiness.

The design is worked flat in stocking stitch, with a lace eyelet row at each stripe transition. The result is a striped knit wrap with a soft, open texture that drapes beautifully across the shoulders and arms – easy to throw on over a sundress, a linen shirt, or a light summer top. The boho feel comes naturally from the fabric itself: the cotton breathes, the lace adds movement, and the stripes give it colour without effort.

Colour combinations are entirely yours to choose. The sample shown uses coral and red for a warm, sun-drenched look, but this summer bolero pattern works just as well in lime and forest green, white and black, beige and camel, soft sage and cream, or any two colours that feel right together. Two shades of the same cotton yarn, one hundred grams in total, and you have everything you need.

The shrug is knitted as one flat rectangle – no shaping, no complicated construction. Once the knitting is done, the sides are seamed partway to create the sleeves, leaving the back open. Finished piece measures approximately 102 cm long and 53 cm wide, fitting most sizes from S to M to L.

YARN AND NEEDLES

This lace knit wrap is worked on 5.5 mm (US 9, UK 5) needles using a thin 100% cotton sport weight yarn – approximately 50 g per 160-180 m. The larger needle size is intentional: it creates the open, drapey texture that gives this summer shrug its lightness and movement. Any smooth, tightly spun cotton yarn in a similar weight will work well, and because the design uses two contrasting colours, a wide colour range matters as much as the yarn itself.

The original sample was knitted in Alize Bella Solid, a 100% cotton yarn available in a wide range of shades, soft to the touch and easy to work with. Other yarns that give a very similar result include Drops Safran, Drops Loves You 7, Valeria di Roma Cotton Soft, and Mondial Cotton Soft Bio – all pure cotton sport weight yarns with comparable meterage and feel. Schachenmayr Peach Cotton Originals is another option with a slightly softer texture, as it combines cotton with a small amount of acrylic. All of these yarns are available in enough colours to give you plenty of choice for your stripe combination.

You will need approximately 60 g of the main colour and 60 g of the contrast colour – 120 g in total. Always work a tension swatch before starting to confirm your finished size.

GAUGE

15 stitches and 19 rows to 10 cm (4 in) in stocking stitch using 5.5 mm needles. Use larger or smaller needles if necessary to obtain the correct tension.
