Roo Intarsia Knit Panel Pattern

This intarsia knitting pattern features Roo, the little kangaroo joey from Disney’s Winnie the Pooh animated series and the classic Hundred Acre Wood stories, worked as a cheerful colorwork square. The design shows Roo with his soft almond fur, bright rounded eyes, a small black nose, and the friendly, bouncy expression that fans of the beloved bear and his friends know so well. Warm almond and brown tones shape his gentle face, and soft sky blue sits behind him on a clean white ground, all framed by a tidy blue garter stitch border. Worked in stockinette intarsia colorwork, this character knit panel turns a simple graph chart into an instantly recognizable kangaroo portrait, a warm keepsake square for a nursery or a child’s room.

This panel is worked in stockinette stitch using the intarsia colorwork method, with the design knitted right into the fabric. Each block of color is worked from its own strand of yarn, so the picture builds up row by row as you knit. If you prefer, the central design can also be added in duplicate stitch over a plain stockinette square. You can follow the colorwork chart, the row-by-row written instructions, or the color blocks, whichever feels most comfortable for you.

The Roo Intarsia Knit Panel Pattern includes a full colorwork graph chart, row-by-row written instructions for every color change, and an easy-to-follow color block version, along with gauge information and full project details. A step-by-step guide shows exactly when to change colors, so you always know which shade comes next. Before you start, take time to check your gauge, as it directly affects the finished size of your panel.

Color palette used in this design (7 colors): Blue, White, Sky, Almond, Brown, Black, and Pink.

Pattern language: English.

Skill level: Intermediate. The pattern uses only basic stockinette stitch, but you should be comfortable with intarsia colorwork and following a graph chart, as the design uses several colors across each row.

The finished Roo Intarsia Knit Panel Pattern works as a wall hanging, a decorative cushion or pillow front, a blanket panel or feature square sewn into a larger throw, a panel on a sweater or a bag, or a table mat or small mat for the home. It also frames beautifully as textile art for a nursery or a child’s room. Whether you knit it for yourself or as a handmade gift, this character knit panel turns a graph chart into a warm, lasting keepsake.

The final size of your panel will depend on the yarn and needle size you choose, and may vary with your personal tension. Tighter stitches will make a smaller panel. The stitch count stays the same, only the size of each stitch changes, so the same chart can be worked at different sizes. Below are approximate sizes for three yarn weights.

Chart size: 82 stitches x 123 rows.

Sport weight (5 ply)
Needles: 3.5 mm (US 4)
Gauge: 22 stitches x 32 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 inches)
Finished size: 37 x 37 cm (15 x 15 in), approx. 120 g
A cushion or pillow front, a bag panel, a table mat, or a decorative cloth.

DK or worsted weight (8 ply)
Needles: 3.75 to 4 mm (US 5 to 7), sample shown
Gauge: 18 stitches x 26 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 inches)
Finished size: 46 x 46 cm (18 x 18 in), approx. 140 to 180 g
A wall hanging, a tote front, a feature panel, or a seat pad.

Aran weight (10 ply)
Needles: 5.5 mm (US 9)
Gauge: 16 stitches x 23 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 inches)
Finished size: 52 x 52 cm (20 x 20 in), approx. 250 g
A larger wall panel, a blanket insert, or a small baby blanket.

Materials needed: the sample was worked in DK weight (8 ply) yarn, 140 g of YarnArt Creative, 100% cotton, 50 g is about 85 m (1.8 oz is about 93 yds), on 3.75 mm (US 5) needles, with a tapestry needle for weaving in ends. To match the sample size, use a DK yarn with a similar gauge, though you can use any yarn you like, just choose suitable needles for your yarn.

These sizes are a guide only, as your own tension affects the result. Always work a gauge swatch before starting.

In intarsia, each area of color is worked from its own separate ball or bobbin of yarn, rather than carrying colors across the back. When you change color, drop the old yarn and pick up the new one from underneath, so the two strands cross and link at the join. This twist locks the colors together and prevents a hole forming between them. Twist on every color change, on both knit and purl rows, and keep your tension relaxed at the joins. Weave in each end along its own color area on the wrong side so it does not show on the front.
