A relaxed pullover with a cat and a dog curled into a yin yang circle across the front. The two-color motif can be knitted in as you go with intarsia, or added afterward in duplicate stitch, so you can choose the method you are most comfortable with. The back and front are knitted flat in stockinette and joined at the shoulders with a three-needle bind off, then the neckband is picked up and knitted in the round and the sleeves are picked up along the body and knitted down to the cuff.

The sample sweater is knitted in soft blue with the motif in black, which keeps the two animals sharp against the background. Any two shades with a clear contrast will work the same way.

In intarsia, each area of color comes from its own ball or bobbin instead of carrying the yarn across the back. When you change color, drop the old yarn and pick up the new one from underneath so the two strands cross and lock together, which prevents a hole at the join. If you would rather not handle two colors while knitting, knit the front plain and add the motif afterward in duplicate stitch, tracing each stitch of the chart over the knitted fabric with a yarn needle. YARN AND NEEDLES

Needles: US 7 (4.5 mm) and US 8 (5 mm), straight and circular, 16 in (40 cm) long.

The sample is knitted with two strands of sport weight (5 ply) yarn held together, using warm-toned leftovers of Drops Safran and Drops Loves You 7.

You only need one of the following options, not all of them. If you prefer a single strand, use any worsted weight yarn of 110 yds / 100 m per 50 g that gives the same gauge. Cascade 220 (Cascade Yarns, wool) makes a warm winter sweater. Comfy (Knit Picks, cotton) makes a lighter version for spring or fall.

Yarn amount: 550 (600, 650, 750, 800) g. Blue 11 (12, 13, 14, 16) balls, black 1 ball.

Notions: stitch holders or waste yarn, stitch markers or loops of yarn.

GAUGE

18 stitches x 26 rows = 4 x 4 in (10 x 10 cm) in stockinette stitch.
