HitsKnits tip
Big color areas? Use intarsia: give each area its own small ball and cross the yarns on the back so no gaps appear.Tiny details of 1 or 2 loops? Use the cut-and-burn method: melt the ends together with a lighter. No flame? Sew the ends together with a needle and thread.Blanket size
Finger knitting has no needle size to choose, so your own tension decides. Looser knitting makes a larger blanket, tighter knitting a smaller one. Find the approximate blanket size, total yarn amount, and yarn totals color by color below:
#7 Jumbo chenille yarn
| ≈ 120 cm (47″) wide × 120–170 cm (47–67″) high | ≈ 2000 g / 12 skeins / 250 m |
| Color | Gram | Skein | Meter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spa Blue | 1080 g | 5 | 122 m |
| White | 650 g | 3 | 75 m |
| Red | 370 g | 2 | 42 m |
| Black | 23 g | 1 | 3 m |
| Carrot | 15 g | 1 | 2 m |
Sizes and yarn amounts are approximate and depend heavily on the yarn brand and line you choose, as well as your tension. Grams vary from yarn to yarn, so go by the meters or yards on your yarn label, and buy one extra skein to be safe.
How gauge changes your blanket
Your tension changes not only the size of your blanket but also its shape. Knit loosely, and your blanket comes out long, like the one on the left. Knit more tightly, and you get an almost square blanket, like the one on the right, with a slightly squashed design.
Can I knit this on a loom?
Loom knitting often gives a tighter gauge. If you’ve already tested your loom and know your loops come out loose, go ahead! If not, I don’t recommend it, or you may waste your yarn and time. Instead, check out my loom knitting patterns, designed especially for looms.
Yarn recommendations

#7 Jumbo yarn weight
Easy care: wash cold up to 30°C (86°F), dry low or flat; no bleach, iron or dry clean.
Watch your fingers: the flame and the melted yarn ends are very hot, so wait until the join has cooled before touching it.
A tip from a happy knitter
★★★★★
“This was my first hand knitted blanket, I recommend while fusing the yarn together to press & roll the yarn in your hand while it’s still warm so it doesn’t have any hard plastic pieces poking out. This was a super easy pattern and as someone who hasn’t done this before I’m really happy with it.”

Free Snowman Blanket Knit Pattern: row-by-row instructions
Each row below lists the colors in order and how many loops to knit in each one. The arrow shows the direction your hands move along that row.
So, let’s begin! Cast on 30 loops.
The cast-on row is your foundation row, so you don’t count it.
In this pattern, Row 1 is worked from right to left (arrow ←). If you work your first row in the opposite direction, from left to right, simply add one extra plain background row before Row 1. This “setup” row shifts everything by one, so your working direction lines up with the pattern and the design won’t come out mirrored. It blends right into the border and won’t be noticeable.
Work till the end, following the color changes using the chart or row-by-row instructions.

Frequently asked questions
What skill level is this blanket?
It’s an intermediate pattern. It’s best for knitters who have finger knitted before and feel comfortable with several color changes in one row. Every row is written out, so you can count your loops as you go.
What yarn is best for a finger knit blanket?
A #7 jumbo chenille yarn. 100% polyester chenille is soft, warm and easy to join when you change colors.
How do I change colors?
It depends on the size of the color section. For larger sections, use intarsia: knit each section from a separate small ball, twisting the strands on the back to avoid holes. For tiny details of 1 or 2 loops, fuse the ends with a lighter or stitch them together with a needle and thread.
Can I print this pattern?
Yes. A printable PDF with the color block guide, full-color chart and written instructions is available in my shop or on Etsy.
