Lilo square knitting pattern
Knit your own playful Lilo-inspired panel with this fun and colorful square knitting pattern, inspired by the beloved Hawaiian girl from Disney’s Lilo & Stitch! This cheerful design features Lilo with her expressive wink, bright smile, and signature red dress, all framed by a rich maroon garter stitch border for a warm and cozy finish.
The panel is worked on a soft cream background using Cream, Black, Maroon, Coral, Cherry, Pink, Powder, White, and Brown shades to create Lilo’s lively expression and detailed colorwork design. The garter stitch border surrounds a smooth stockinette center, making this square perfect for blankets, decorative pillows, nursery décor, sweaters, tote bags, wall hangings, placemats, and other handmade projects.
The pattern includes a full colorwork chart and row-by-row written instructions. Use intarsia or duplicate stitch techniques to bring this Disney-inspired character to life, one stitch at a time!
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
The final size of the project will depend on the yarn and needle size you choose. Here are examples for three different yarn weights:
Sport weight (5 ply) with 3.5 mm (US 4) needles:
37 × 37 cm (15″ × 15″) — approx. 120 g
DK (8 ply) or worsted weight (8 ply) with 3.75 mm – 4 mm (US 5-7) needles (sample shown): 46 × 46 cm (18″ × 18″) — approx. 140–180 g
Aran weight (10 ply) with 5.5 mm (US 9) needles:
52 × 52 cm (20″ × 20″) — approx. 250 g
MATERIALS NEEDED
I used DK weight (8 ply) yarn — 140 g of YarnArt Creative, 100% cotton, 50 g ≈ 85 m / 1.8 oz ≈ 93 yds
Knitting needles: 3.75 mm (US 5)
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
If you want to match the sample size, use DK yarn with a similar gauge. However, you’re free to use any yarn you like! This project is highly adaptable — just choose suitable needles for your yarn and enjoy the process.
GAUGE
22 stitches × 32 rows = 10 × 10 cm (4″ × 4″) in sport 5-ply yarn
18 stitches × 26 rows = 10 × 10 cm (4″ × 4″) in DK or worsted 8-ply
16 stitches × 23 rows = 10 × 10 cm (4″ × 4″) in aran 10-ply yarn
The central design is worked using the intarsia technique or duplicate stitch. A step-by-step guide is included, showing exactly when to change colors. The edges are worked in garter stitch; the center is stockinette stitch.
PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS
Cast on 82 stitches.
Knit 9 rows in garter stitch (knit every row).
Main section (Rows 10–114):
- Work the first and last 7 stitches of each row in garter stitch.
- The center 68 stitches are worked in stockinette stitch, following the step-by-step guide for when and where to change colors. Work the intarsia chart, twisting yarns as needed to avoid holes.
- On wrong-side rows, purl the center stitches following the chart.
After completing the chart, knit 9 more rows in garter stitch.
Bind off all stitches and weave in ends.
Wash and lay flat to dry.
